Clauses of Concession
Expresan una idea que parece contradictoria o inesperada con respecto a la principal. Utilizan conectores como:
although / even though + sujeto + verbo (aunque)
despite / in spite of (a pesar de) + sustantivo o gerundio (-ing)
however (sin embargo, no obstante)
Ejemplos:
Although it was expensive, we bought it.
(Aunque era caro, lo compramos.)Even though she was exhausted, she finished the race.
(Aunque estaba exhausta, terminó la carrera.)In spite of the cold, he went swimming.
(A pesar del frío, él fue a nadar.)Despite feeling tired, he went swimming.
(A pesar de sentirse cansado, él fue a nadar.)It was raining. However, we went out.
(Estaba lloviendo. Sin embargo, salimos.)
Nota:
Con despite / in spite of, siempre sigue un sustantivo o un verbo en gerundio (terminado en '–ing'), nunca una cláusula completa con sujeto y verbo.
Podemos usar in spite of the fact / despite the fact (that) + sujeto + verbo
Ejemplo:
In spite of the fact that it was raining, we went out for a walk.
